“It is hard not to be afraid. Be less afraid”
On that fateful day, the golden rays of the sun were coming from the east and the leaves of the trees and small plants moving in such beautiful rhythm to the beats of the gentle breeze as if meaning to say “the good news is yet to be heard, everyone should wait in anticipation for it”. That was when it happened!
A loud cry of pain filled the compound. It was so loud, yet feeble, that it attracted the neighbours. It was one of such pains that brought joy after a few hours of more intense pain. You can guess right already – labour pains. And that was not just any ordinary woman, that was my mother but I couldn’t do anything about it. Yes! I couldn’t. It wasn’t like I had a choice anyway. I just had to watch her bear such pains because I wanted to see what was on the outside. I wanted to be born.
I was born like most other kids – from the fusion of two gametes, unsure of giving required results; the very first stage of my being. Weeks turned into months and the expected anatomical features of every zygote began to emerge. I was growing fast and strong too. Thanks to the umbilical cord connecting my mother and me.
It was time for me to be born as because I wanted to move from one stage to another, I had to push. A saying goes thus “Push yourself because no one else will do it for you” but this one was different because I started the “push” and then my mother continued; LOL. But when my head came out, I wanted to run back because it just wasn’t conducive but the doctor held my head and the pushing continued and then I was born. That was the first time I experienced FEAR
What exactly is fear? Fear is that phobia induced by something or someone; the worst being the fear of the unknown. Who knows what will happen in the next few minutes? Who can tell if one will make it back to one’s destination today? Who knows if the building will come down on us? Who can? No one. It is difficult to totally eliminate fear but we can overcome it. Be less afraid.
At one point, I wrote my UTME that devil called JAMB. “What would happen if I don’t pass?” was the question on most peoples’ minds. Then that passed and there came Post-UTME, another obstacle on its own but we passed right? Yes we did. We overcame our fears.
People always tell you “you’ll not succeed, don’t bother trying”. Forget those people, they will come back running when they see you where you want to be; but what exactly is success?
To some gangster on the street, it’s when he finally rapes that innocent girl he has been eyeing, to some politician somewhere at the top, it’s when he finally transfers our budget fund to his own personal account. To some drunk, it’s when he finally accomplishes his goal of finishing 3 crates of beer in one round, to some ladies, it’s when you get 4,000 followers on instagram; to some guys, it’s when you scam people on the internet and you ‘hammer’ while to some others, success is impacting lives positively; to some, it is having the best grades but being dead to friends and family. This is to say that success has several definitions to different people. The question is what is success to you?
I won’t give a definition of success but let’s just go with that general perception of what it is – living a very comfortable life with little or no worries and having happiness in one’s life but if I were to give a definition, I’ll say it is the sum of small efforts repeated day in, day out.
In a country like ours, it’s very difficult to achieve a “successful life” but it is not impossible because that word impossible itself is “I’m possible”.
- To be successful, you need to believe in yourself and all that you are. Know that there is something inside you that is greater than any obstacle.
- You have to work hard and perspire to acquire that desire that you admire.
- You have to have the right directions (accurate map), the right behavior (try hard, be diligent, work faster, extra) and the right attitude (think positively, speak positively).
|Wrong direction||+||Right behavior||+||Right attitude||=||FAILURE|
|Right direction||+||Wrong behavior||+||Right attitude||=||FAILURE|
|Right direction||+||Right behaviour||+||Wrong attitude||=||FAILURE|
|Right direction||+||Right behavior||+||Right attitude||=||SUCCESS|
One more thing, to be successful, be ready to fail because “failure is the opportunity to begin again more intelligently”. When you try and fail, do not fail to try again because when one door closes, another opens but we look so long and regretfully at the closed door that we do not see the one which has been opened for us.
Everybody is a genius. If you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree, it will live its whole life believing that it is stupid.
